The Jjimjilbang Date: Why Korean Couples Spend Cold Weekends at the Sauna

03 Nov 2026

The Paradise Journal · Culture & Connection

When the weather turns cold in Korea, a surprising number of couples skip the restaurant and the movie and head somewhere warmer: the jjimjilbang. Matching cotton uniforms, a heated floor, a couple of eggs, and an entire afternoon with nowhere else to be. Here is what a jjimjilbang date actually is, why it works so well in winter, and how to have one without flying to Seoul.

Ask a Korean couple what they did on a cold Saturday, and there is a fair chance the answer is a jjimjilbang. Not a fancy one, and not for a special occasion. Just the neighborhood sauna, for the whole afternoon, with a stop for snacks and very possibly a nap.

It is common enough to have its own name, jjimjilbang deiteu, the jjimjilbang date. It turns up in Korean dramas often enough to count as a familiar scene, but it is popular for reasons that have nothing to do with television. We have written about why Koreans have always bathed together and about what all the objects in a jjimjilbang are for. This is about the date itself: what happens, why it works, and why it is at its best when the weather turns cold.

The Short Version

A jjimjilbang date is a long, low-key afternoon that a couple spends together at a Korean sauna complex, or jjimjilbang. The two of you split up for the gender-separated baths, then meet again in the shared lounge areas, dressed in identical cotton loungewear, to move between warm rooms, eat simple snacks, talk, and rest side by side. It needs no planning, costs far less than dinner and a show, and gets better the colder it is outside. In Fort Lee, New Jersey, just across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan, Paradise Spa & Sauna offers the same kind of day, with a side-by-side massage to finish.

What Is a Jjimjilbang Date?

A jjimjilbang is a Korean sauna complex: gender-separated bathing areas with hot and cold pools, plus a shared area beyond them with warm rooms, heated floors, lounges, and somewhere to eat. If you are new to the whole idea, our first-timer’s guide to the jjimjilbang covers how a visit works.

A jjimjilbang date is simply spending that day as a couple. There is no special package and no set itinerary. You pay for admission, change into the same loungewear as everyone else, and stay as long as you like. In Korea, the people doing it range from university students on a budget to couples who have been married for thirty years, and the appeal is much the same for both: a long stretch of time together, somewhere warm, with nothing to organize.

What makes it a date rather than just a sauna visit is the shape of the day. You arrive together, part ways briefly, find each other again, and then spend hours in the same unhurried rhythm. That small separation and reunion is where the whole thing starts.

Separate Doors, Same Floor

How a jjimjilbang date works Two people leave separate gender-divided bathing areas and meet again in the shared lounge, both wearing the same loungewear. BATHS · WOMEN BATHS · MEN SHARED LOUNGE · SAME LOUNGEWEAR Meet on the other side
The baths are separate. Everything after that, you share.

The Goodbye at the Locker Room

Every jjimjilbang date begins with a short goodbye. The bathing areas are separated by gender, and they are enjoyed the traditional way, without swimwear. So the two of you head through different doors to shower and soak, after agreeing to meet on the other side.

That half hour apart is part of the experience. Each of you gets a quiet soak at your own pace, without having to make conversation or check on the other person. By the time you come out, you are already warm, unhurried, and in a better mood than when you walked in.

The Reunion in Matching Uniforms

A while later you find each other again in the shared lounge, hair still damp, wearing exactly the same oversized cotton outfit as everyone else in the building. It is a small, funny moment, and most couples remember it.

Nobody looks their best in jjimjilbang loungewear, and nobody is trying to. There is no outfit to plan, no table to book, and no one to impress. For couples who have been together for years, that is a relief. For newer couples, it can be a surprisingly quick way past the polite stage of getting to know each other.

What Do You Actually Do on a Jjimjilbang Date?

Most dates have a shape: a start time, a main event, a check, a goodbye. A jjimjilbang date mostly does not. Instead it settles into a loose loop that you repeat for as long as it feels good:

  • Warm up. Sit together in the sauna rooms until the cold of the day is gone.
  • Cool down. Step out, drink some water, let your body settle.
  • Rest. Stretch out side by side in the lounge or on a warm floor, and let the conversation go wherever it goes.
  • Snack. In Korea, that usually means roasted eggs and a cold can of sikhye, a lightly sweet rice drink, shared between rounds.
  • Repeat, or nap. There is no wrong order, and falling asleep is considered a success.

Some couples bring a book. Some watch whatever is playing on the lounge television. Many simply lie next to each other for an hour and later describe it as the best part of their week. Nothing about it is rushed, and that is exactly the point. An afternoon with nowhere else to be is rare enough these days that it starts to feel like a gift.

“Nobody looks their best in a jjimjilbang uniform. That is half the reason it works.”

Why Korean Couples Go When It Gets Cold

Cold outside, warm inside Snow falls outside while steam rises inside a warm jjimjilbang lounge where two people rest side by side on a heated floor. OUTSIDE INSIDE WARM FLOOR · NOWHERE TO BE
The colder it gets outside, the better the warm floor feels.

In summer, a jjimjilbang date is a pleasant way to get out of the heat. In the colder months it becomes something closer to a habit. There are three reasons, and they reinforce each other.

The Warmest Room in Town

When it is cold outside, the warmest place you can find is also the most appealing place to spend an afternoon. That first minute in hot water, after a walk through the wind, is a feeling Koreans even have a special word for, and on cold weekends you hear it said a lot.

A Date That Does Not Depend on the Weather

Cold weather shrinks the list of things couples actually want to do. Long walks lose their charm, outdoor plans fall through, and a whole day indoors starts to sound ideal, as long as it is somewhere comfortable. A jjimjilbang covers warmth, food, rest, and company under one roof, so there is nothing to cancel when the forecast turns.

Low Cost, Low Pressure

Admission to a jjimjilbang is usually far less than a dinner out, and once you are inside there is nothing more you have to buy. That makes it easy to suggest and easy to say yes to. It also takes the pressure off the date itself. There is no reservation time to hit and no moment when the evening is supposed to be going well. You just spend the day.

How Is It Different from a Spa Day for Two?

In much of the West, a couples’ spa day means booking treatments, wearing robes, and following a schedule from one appointment to the next. We have written about a summer version of that kind of day ourselves.

A jjimjilbang date is looser and more social. It is less about the treatments and more about the time. The main event is not a massage at two o’clock but the hours in between: the warm rooms, the snacks, the conversation, the nap. Treatments can be part of it, and a side-by-side massage is a lovely way to end, but the date works perfectly well without one. That is why it suits both a first date and a fortieth anniversary.

How to Plan a Jjimjilbang Date Near New York City

You do not need a flight to Seoul. Paradise Spa & Sauna follows the same layout as a Korean jjimjilbang: separate bathing areas first, then shared spaces where everyone wears the same loungewear.

What a Day Pass Includes

A Spa & Sauna Day Pass for each of you covers the whole day: the loungewear, a locker, towels and toiletries, the dry saunas and steam room, the hot soak and cold plunge, and the lounge and sleeping rooms. Massages, body scrubs, and facials are booked separately if you want them.

Good to Know Before You Go

  • Each of you will need a physical government-issued photo ID at check-in.
  • Swimwear is not worn in the bathing areas, which follow Korean custom.
  • Phones and cameras are not allowed in the locker rooms or bathing areas, so plan to leave them in your locker.
  • Outside food and alcohol are not permitted, and there is no re-entry once you leave the building, so plan to stay for the full visit.
  • We are open every day from 10 AM to 9 PM.

A Few Tips for Your First One

Pick a meeting spot before you split up at the locker rooms. Take your time in the baths, because nobody is in a hurry on the other side. And plan for longer than you think. Most couples underestimate how long they will want to stay, and an afternoon that starts at two can easily run into the evening.

Paradise is in Fort Lee, New Jersey, just across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan and an easy drive from Englewood Cliffs, Tenafly, and the rest of Bergen County.

Jjimjilbang Date FAQ

Can couples go to a jjimjilbang together?

Yes. The bathing areas are separated by gender, so couples soak separately first. After that, the shared lounge areas are open to everyone in matching loungewear, and that is where couples spend most of the day together.

What do you wear on a jjimjilbang date?

The jjimjilbang provides loungewear, usually a matching cotton top and shorts, along with towels. Swimwear is not worn in the baths. You do not need to bring anything special beyond your ID and a change of clothes for the drive home.

How long does a jjimjilbang date last?

There is no set length, but most couples stay at least three or four hours, and many stay longer. Rushing defeats the purpose, so plan an afternoon rather than an hour.

Is a jjimjilbang date good for a first date?

It can be, especially for people who find formal dinners stiff. The matching uniforms and unhurried pace take a lot of pressure off. If you are not yet comfortable with the idea, a shared day in the lounges and saunas followed by a meal is a gentle way to try it.

Can we add a couples massage?

Yes. Many couples finish the day with a side-by-side massage in a private room. At Paradise, the Paradise Duo combines admission for two with a 60-minute side-by-side massage, and couple’s massages can also be booked on their own.

Make It a Date, or Give One

If you would like to end the afternoon in the same room, the Paradise Duo pairs spa admission for two with a 60-minute side-by-side massage. On a cold day, a Couple’s Hot Stone Massage is an especially fitting close: warmed stones, a quiet room, and the two of you leaving at the same unhurried pace.

And if this is a season for saying thank you, a jjimjilbang date makes an easy gift. A Paradise Gift Card can cover the day passes, the massage, or both, and lets the two of them choose the cold weekend that suits them.

Pick a cold Saturday. Bring someone. Meet on the other side.
